One of the major complaints about the 2nd generation of AirPods was their one-size-fits-all principle. Even though they did prove to be pretty reliable when it comes to staying in your ears, in spite of many who thought otherwise, not everyone found them that comfortable.
That is not surprising since not all of us have the same ear size. Someone might find the regular AirPods size comfortable while for someone else they could be too big or too small. Especially the new AirPods Pro which are wider than the previous AirPods.
But it seems that the Apple inventors had listened to its customers.
A new customizable fit
Recognizing that we are not all the same, the newest AirPods Pro came with flexible silicone tips of 3 sizes (small, medium, large).
They have been designed so they would adapt to the contours of each of your ears. Besides comfort, this provides a better seal so the noise cancellation feature can work seamlessly.
Tips are easily placed on the AirPods just by clicking them, so you can try each of them to see which fits the best.
A vent system
With a mission to make AirPods Pro as comfortable as possible, Apple has introduced something they call ˝an innovative vent system˝.
What it does is that it equalizes pressure in the ear so the discomfort that is often felt with in-ear earphones disappears. It´s as if you almost don´t feel the AirPods Pro at all.
How to choose the best size?
The tips of your AirPods Pro should seal perfectly with your ear canal so you could experience a better noise cancellation and more powerful bass.
The AirPods Pro come with the medium size tips attached, so try on those first. If they don´t sit securely and comfortably try adjusting them. If it still doesn´t feel right, switch to either the larger or smaller tip, which come in the box.
If you´re still not sure that you have the perfect fit possible there is a way to establish that.
The Ear Tip Fit Test
Apple introduced the Ear Tip Fit Test (what a tongue twister) with the AirPods Pro to ensure you´re getting the best sound possible along with excellent noise cancellation for the ultimate audio experience.
Using advanced technology combining internal microphones in both AirPods and algorithms this test helps you choose the best ear tip size. They measure the level of the sound in ears and compare it to the sound output coming from the speaker driver. So you will know if that fit is the right for you or you need to change the tip.
In order to do the Ear Tip Fit Test, you need to have an iOS or iPadOS device and that your iOS is version 13.2 or later.
How to perform the test?
- Make sure your AirPods Pro are connected to your device (iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch).
- Place the AirPods into your ears.
- Go to Settings > Bluetooth.
- Tap the Info (i) icon of your AirPods in the devices list.
- Tap on Ear Tip Fit Test > Continue > Play button.
Once finished, the results will inform you whether both AirPods have the right tip size under each AirPod image. If it´s good, you´ll get a message saying ˝Good seal˝ in green.
If not, you´ll get a message in yellow telling you try on a different size until one fits you. First, try adjusting it, but if it still shows the same message, try on another tip size. Luckily, there are only three. If for the most optimal fit you need AirPods of different tip sizes, the test will let you know that as well.
